Why You Should Brew Coffee with Purified Water

April 5, 2018

If you’re a coffee lover, you know exactly how coffee is supposed to taste. Coffee attributes like weak, bitter, strong or robust all concern the kind of beans you chose. But even if you’re a coffee connoisseur, did you know that a cup of coffee is about 98 percent water? It looks like beans aren’t the only culprit when it comes to getting that perfect sip. The type of water you use also makes a huge difference. That fact alone is the reason to brew your coffee with high-quality water.

HOW DOES “REGULAR” WATER AFFECT MY COFFEE?

Using the wrong water can ruin what could have otherwise been a wonderful cup of coffee. Even “drinking quality” tap water can contain substances that, while not necessarily harmful, can make your coffee taste less than appealing, like:

  • Soil substances, such as minerals
  • Water treatment substances, such as chlorine
  • Residual water pipe substances, such as copper and iron
  • Pollution residue

HOW DOES HIGH-QUALITY WATER HELP?

For brewing the best, rich-tasting cup of coffee, you want water that’s free of chemicals like chlorine and chloramine and that tastes, smells and looks fresh. But don’t just go by sight and smell. Often the most harmful substances are lurking, undetectable by the eye and nose!

So, what do you do? For starters, find better water that’s gone through a purification process to reduce the presence of unwanted substances. These include, but aren’t limited to, chlorine and chlorine by-products, bacteria and heavy metals like lead and mercury. Using water that’s had these impurities removed will help ensure your coffee tastes pure, just as it should.

Certain purification systems that use Reverse Osmosis (RO) also remove magnesium and calcium. However, these minerals can further enhance coffee flavor. If you want to keep these minerals in your brewing water, you’ll want to look for a blending RO system that adds mineral-rich water back in, such as Primo’s Pre-Filled Exchange Water.
