Hydration: The Only Hangover Cure

May 21, 2019

Many of us have woken up with that all too familiar feeling—headache, sluggishness, nausea—a hangover. If only we had been proactive enough to help prevent such a terrible feeling! It might surprise you that it is pretty easy to prevent. Let’s talk about how to drink responsibly in more ways than one.

THE ULTIMATE CURE

Really, the only thing that can help a hangover is not drinking too much. But we get it—sometimes, it happens. But it’s no secret that increased hydration can decrease your chance of an alcohol-related injury, thus decreasing your risk for a hangover. So, what is it about water that helps keep you in your right mind?

For starters, alcohol is a diuretic, which means it naturally dehydrates you by taking water and salt out of the body. This is the main cause of a hangover, because it strips you of crucial electrolytes that help keep you feeling in tip-top shape. So, it’s obvious that drinking water would slow this process, because water is the only true cure for dehydration.

Water is also a key factor that contributes to your blood alcohol content (BAC). The lower the water content in your body, the higher your BAC will be, thus causing that nasty hangover the next morning. In fact, the reason headaches go hand-in-hand with hangovers is because the brain is made up of 73% water. When we dehydrate those tissues, it causes shrinking, which turns into painful pressure—aka, headaches.

Although water won’t totally keep inebriation at bay, a good rule of thumb is to consume one glass of water in between each alcoholic drink. This is a responsible way to keep away dehydration while still enjoying yourself on a big night out. And, it’s the best way to reduce your chance of a hangover, which is always an added bonus.

CHOOSE WATER WISELY

Although you can’t control what kind of water you’ll drink at the bar, you can make smart choices before you even leave home. Staying hydrated before a night of debauchery is just as important as staying hydrated during! But as you might not know, not all water is created equal. In fact, tap water often contains harmful contaminates such as lead, bacteria, and trace pharmaceuticals—none of which help cure a hangover.
