Why Drink a Glass of Water First Thing in the Morning?

April 25, 2018

Is your coffee maker set to have your first cup of the day ready for you as soon as you get out of bed? If so, you’re far from alone. Many of us reach for some type of beverage, typically coffee or tea, to get us going in the morning. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, we’d like to suggest drinking a glass or two of water before enjoying that first cuppa.

Not convinced you should start your day with a refreshing glass of H2O? Here are three compelling reasons that may change your mind.

1. Rehydrate the Body

After going six to eight hours (depending on how long you typically sleep) without consuming any water, your body becomes dehydrated. Drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages as soon as you rise further dehydrates you.

To quickly rehydrate your body and get it ready to perform its various functions throughout the day, it’s important to get it some water first thing in the morning. Then you can have your coffee.

2. Jump-Start Your Metabolism

Water helps metabolize and transport the essential carbohydrates and proteins that you consume every day. Providing your body with water in the morning will help get your metabolism going for the day.

3. Fuel Your Brain

Since approximately 80% of the brain is made up of water, hydration is critical for maintaining optimal brain function. While we need to keep our brain hydrated throughout the day, getting in that first glass or two of water is essential for giving our brains a great start and helping us to achieve increased levels alertness and productivity in the morning.

Does Water Temperature Matter?

Wondering if there’s an “ideal” temperature for your drinking water? Whether you drink warm or cold water doesn’t really matter that much. While room temperature water is recommended for optimal digestion, the most important thing is to drink enough water to rehydrate your body in the morning and keep it hydrated throughout the day.

Starting your day with water is one of the best habits you can create – and it’s easy! Keep a glass of water next to your nightstand so you can literally grab it as you get out of bed. Or, you can pour yourself a glass and have it while you wait for your coffee to finish brewing. You’ll reap many benefits from adding this one simple task to your morning routine!
